A few days back, I was hanging out with some friends in the University and we started talking about our favourite TV shows. They were really surprised when I told them that my favourite show at the moment is not a sci-fi series, sitcom or any of the popular reality shows on TV. Rather my favourite happens to be an architecture show - Channel 4's "Grand Designs".
Initially I was wondering "who's going to watch this show" but after catching an episode I was hooked. Kevin McCloud goes around visiting people with really unusual architectural house-building projects, some of which sound really wacky but ultimately succeed in the end. You really feel for the people when they face some obstacle during their house build and almost all of them will face some problem or the other at one point in their house build. It's not surprising that most ultimately say that they will not go through a similar project ever again.
It might turn off some people from building their own homes but watching all these people building the house of their dreams makes me think about my own dream house - my own Grand Design.
They also hold "Grand Designs Live events" from time to time. Just found out that next Grand Designs Live event takes place at Birmingham's NEC between 10-12 October 2008. I would definitely love to attend the event.
